Welcome to the home page for the Department of Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Dr. James D. Hardy was named the first Chair of the Department in 1953. The Department was fully established in 1955 when the University of Mississippi School of Medicine opened. The early history of the Department was remarkable for original research in cardiovascular physiology, the first open heart operation performed in the State of Mississippi on January 27, 1959, the world's first lung transplantation on June 11, 1963, and the world's first human heart transplant on January 23, 1964. In less than 10 years, the Department of Surgery established a world-wide reputation for excellence.
Following this legacy of innovation and excellence, we are committed to providing the highest quality medical care for our patients, world class education for our students and residents, and continuing innovative basic science and clinical research. The Department of Surgery is composed of 8 divisions including General Surgery, Trauma/Critical Care, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Urology. Our clinical programs are based at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, which is the only medical school and tertiary care hospital in the State of Mississippi. The Department remains active in medical education with ACGME accredited residency programs in General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology and Cardiothoracic Surgery as well as medical student education programs. We have robust clinical and basic science research programs.
This website is designed to introduce you to our faculty and to provide you with information about our clinical, research and education programs. We welcome you to the Department of Surgery.
