Dr. Hawxby completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He completed a Transplant Surgery fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Prior to coming to UMMC, Dr. Hawxby was an Assistant Professor of Transplant Surgery at UAB in Birmingham. He is board-certified in General Surgery. Dr. Hawxby's professional interests include kidney, liver, and pancreas transplantation, abdominal organ recovery, ICU management of organ donors and transplant recipients,hepatobiliary surgery for primary and metastatic liver tumors, hemodialysis vascular access surgery, laparoscopic and hand-assisted donor nephrectomy for transplantation, ABO blood-group and HLA-incompatible kidney transplantation, altruistic kidney transplantation, kidney paired donation (kidney exchange), and organ donor and transplant education for medical professionals.
