Dr. Prewitt is a Jackson native and graduated from the Unviversity of Mississippi. He earned his M.D. at UMMC and completed his general surgery residency at UMMC in 1995. He trained in surgical oncology at the NIH where he was Medical Staff Fellowship at the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute. After his training, Dr. Prewitt spent 14 years in the private practice of general surgery and breast surgery in North Carolina and Oklahoma before returning to UMMC as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery in April, 2009.

Dr. Prewitt is an Associate Professor in Surgical Oncology. He is a full-time breast surgeon and is the surgical director of our comprehensive breast cancer treatment program, University Breast Care. He is an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons where he serves on the Legislative Committee.

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Prewitt is also Director of Health Care Policy at UMMC. His interests in the policy arena are focused on health care delivery models.
