Residency Programs Application Information
The General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a strong, balanced program with the flexibility to support multiple surgical career tracks. The program uses the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Students should check with their Dean's office if unfamiliar with this service. As part of the ERAS application, the residency program requires a recent photograph, an official transcript, USMLE Step 1 results, a dean's letter (Medical Student Performance Evaluation--MSPE), and three letters of recommendation from faculty. At least two of these faculty letters should come from surgeons, but a Surgery Department Chairman's letter is not required. USMLE Step 2 results should be provided as soon as they become available to the applicant.
Five Categorical and two Nondesignated Preliminary residents are chosen annually through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Pre-screening of applications begins in early September. Competitive applicants will be invited to visit UMMC for interviews. During the interview day there will be presentations by the Department Chairman and the Residency Program Director, a tour of the medical center, interviews with faculty, and opportunities to speak informally with residents and faculty. Interviews are held on Wednesdays in November, December and January. An informal welcome reception for applicants with residents is held on Tuesday evening prior to each Wednesday interview date.
The deadline for application is January 12, 2009. An applicant without United States citizenship must have either a J-1 visa or Permanent Resident status (Green Card) in order to be employed as a resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
