The
General Surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC)
is an ACGME fully accredited five-year program. Applications for first postgraduate
year (PGY-1) positions are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application
System (ERAS). Competitive applicants are invited to visit on designated Wednesdays in November, December, and January. For Academic year 2008-2009, we will offer five Categorical and two Non-Designated Preliminary residency positions through the National Resident Matching Program
(NRMP). Selection is based upon academic records, recommendation letters and
interviews without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin,
marital or veteran status, age, or disability. The Categorical program is “non-pyramidal”,
finishing five General Surgery chief residents annually. Each Nondesignated
Preliminary position is for one year only. Five Designated Preliminary positions
are filled by UMMC Otolaryngology and Urology residency trainees.
Approximately 85% of the
five-year
Categorical Surgery program is spent on the UMMC's
154-acre main campus in Jackson,
the state capitol. On this campus are the University
Hospitals: the Blair
E. Batson Hospital for Children, the Winfred
G. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants,
the AW
Conerly Critical Care Hospital and
the original
Adult Hospital. The New Adult Hospital opened in 2006. Adult
outpatient clinics are located at the Jackson Medical Mall. Co-located on the main campus is the Veterans
Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).
About 15% of the residency
program is spent away from the main campus. Tupelo's North
Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) and the Surgical Clinic of Tupelo have
been closely associated with the General Surgery residency for over 30 years.
Resident
housing is provided in Tupelo. Newer rotations with members of Surgery Clinic
Associates and Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic are based at the Mississippi
Baptist Medical Center (MBMC) and St.
Dominic Memorial Hospital, both located within two miles of the UMMC Jackson
main campus.
The PGY-1 year builds an
educational foundation in perioperative care and basic operative skills. Progressively
increasing responsibility and operative experience occur from the beginning
of the first year to the completion of the chief year. The Surgical
Simulation Center is located in the Adult Hospital and is open continuously
for resident use. The simulation curriculum is supplemented by in
vivo laboratory sessions. UMMC consistently matches or exceeds the
typical operative experience available in the United States. Each chief
resident has primary responsibility for managing his/her surgical service, with
readily available faculty support. General
Surgery core conferences meet weekly, utilizing a variety of formats. All residents take the American Board of Surgery In-Service Training Examination
annually. Each Categorical resident completes at least one research
project suitable for publication. Every Chief Resident presents his/her research
work during the James D. Hardy Surgical Forum, competing for the Forum's resident
prize. The Department financially supports resident travel for paper and poster
presentations. Residents actively participate in medical student teaching and
evaluation during all main campus rotations.
All residents have three
weeks of vacation per year. In-hospital call is no more often than every fourth
night throughout the residency. Benefits
include health insurance, retirement fund matching, and liability insurance.
