Plastic Surgery Residency
This three-year training program is fully approved for two residents per year, 6 total. The program involves the University Hospitals and Clinics, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and several private practices. The full-time faculty consists of four plastic surgeons, two PhDs, and one instructor in microsurgery. There are 14 part-time faculty as well. This program has strong emphasis on microsurgery and congenital deformities including craniofacial anomalies. There is also a large volume of craniofacial and hand trauma. The hand service is shared with orthopaedic surgery, while all replantations are carried out by plastic surgery.
There is strong commitment to basic and clinical research. Areas of interest include free radical pathophysiology, wound healing, flap physiology and peripheral nerve pathophysiology. The division has an established lab headed by two full-time PhDs. Residents have won several national plastic surgery research awards.
Last year the total number of plastic surgery procedures carried out at the University of Mississippi Medical Center was 1500.
Residents attend at least one national meeting each year. Residents must take the Plastic Surgery In-Service Exam every year, and are expected to study Selected Readings in Plastic Surgery.
